Dr. Mary Naylor's visit to Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill was energizing and thought provoking!
Dr. Mary Naylor, the 2010 Duke Carolina Visiting Professor, delivered the Carol Hogue Distinguished Lectureship as part of the Care Transitions: Research, Realities and Reform conference sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. The conference highlighted efforts across Duke and UNC's campuses and the community to improve care transitions for seniors.
Dr. Mary Naylor has led an interdisciplinary program of research designed to improve outcomes and reduce costs of care for vulnerable community based elders. To date, Dr. Naylor and her research team have completed three National Insitutre of Nursing Research (NINR)-funded randomized clinical trials focusing on discharge planning and home follow-up of high-risk elders by advanced practice nurses. In addition, she is co-faculty director of the Living Independently For Elders (LIFE) which is part of a national model health care delivery program, the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).
We were also pleased to have, William A. Dombi, Esq. as our Distinguished Guest Speaker. He addressed healthcare reform and its implications for chronic care management, care transitions, and nursing. Mr. Dombi is the Director of the Center for Healthcare Law in Washington, DC. The Center for Health Care Law is a nonprofit, public interest law firm, established by the National Association of Home and Hospice Care in 1987. The purpose of the law firm is to help protect the rights of the elderly, disabled, handicapped, and chronically ill who require health care services.
